Quebec Seniors Set to Receive Increased Old Age Security Payments
Quebec seniors will see a boost in their Old Age Security (OAS) payments this month, with some individuals receiving over $800 as a result of a recent inflation adjustment. The latest deposit, scheduled for November 26, 2025, reflects the increased rates that took effect in October, aimed at helping seniors manage rising living costs.
OAS payments, administered by Service Canada, provide essential monthly financial support to Canadians aged 65 and older. These payments are a crucial component of retirement income for millions of seniors across the country. The adjustments to the OAS rates are reviewed quarterly, with the most recent increase being 0.7%.
Understanding OAS Payments and Eligibility
The Old Age Security program is Canada’s primary federal pension initiative, offering monthly benefits to eligible seniors regardless of their work history. To qualify for OAS, recipients must be:
- 65 years or older
- A Canadian citizen or legal resident at the time of application approval
- A resident of Canada for at least 10 years after turning 18
For those who have lived outside Canada, eligibility can still be maintained if they lived in the country for at least 20 years after turning 18 and were citizens or legal residents when they left. Notably, high-income seniors may face a reduction in their OAS payments through the OAS recovery tax, which begins for individuals earning over $148,541 annually if they are aged 65 to 74, and for those 75 and older, the threshold is $154,196.
Most Canadians are automatically enrolled in the OAS program, typically receiving a letter from Service Canada around their 64th birthday, detailing when payments will commence. Those who do not receive this notification must apply manually. Payments can start as early as the month following an individual’s 65th birthday, although seniors have the option to defer until age 70, which increases their monthly benefits.
Payment Amounts and Tax Implications
The current maximum monthly OAS amounts are $740.05 for seniors aged 65 to 74, and $814.52 for those aged 75 and older. The actual amount received varies based on the length of Canadian residence, with a requirement of 40 years of residency after age 18 to qualify for the full benefit. It is important to note that OAS payments count as taxable income and must be reported during tax season. Although Service Canada does not automatically withhold taxes, seniors can opt for voluntary tax deductions to manage their tax liabilities.
The upcoming OAS payment will be deposited directly into bank accounts for those enrolled in direct deposit, while cheque payments may experience delays. Seniors are encouraged to switch to direct deposit to ensure timely access to their funds. Following the November payment, the final OAS deposit for the year will occur on December 22, 2025.
In summary, Quebec seniors can expect increased financial support this November through the OAS program, with adjustments reflecting the current economic landscape. Understanding eligibility and maximizing benefits is crucial for seniors as they navigate their retirement income.
