Rapper Arrested in Connection with Murder of Taiwanese Influencer
Homicide detectives in Malaysia are investigating the murder of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, 31, whose body was discovered in a bathtub at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on October 22, 2023. The case has drawn significant media attention, especially following the arrest of popular Chinese-Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee, who was reportedly the last person to see Hsieh alive.
Initially classified as an accidental death, Hsieh’s case changed trajectory after investigators uncovered new evidence, prompting authorities to reclassify it as homicide. Following this revelation, Namewee surrendered to police on Wednesday to assist in the investigation. A police official stated, “For now, we regard this person who was last with the victim as being involved in the case. We will be calling him in to assist in the investigation. Depending on the findings, we will decide whether he should be treated as a suspect,” as reported by the New Straits Times.
Hsieh, who boasted approximately 2 million social media followers and earned around $40 per month from her OnlyFans account, gained fame as the ‘Nurse Goddess’ due to her background as a nursing student.
At the time of Hsieh’s death, Namewee was also questioned by police regarding unrelated drug possession charges. He has since denied any wrongdoing and expressed sorrow over Hsieh’s death, promising to assist investigators in finding her killer. His lawyer, Joshua Tay, emphasized the need for a thorough and fair investigation.
Background on Namewee
Namewee is known for his provocative artistic style, which often critiques political, racial, and religious issues in Malaysia. His works have drawn scrutiny, leading to multiple arrests. In 2016, he faced backlash after releasing the music video for “Oh My God,” which was deemed disrespectful to Islam due to its use of the word “Allah.” In 2018, he was detained again for a video that featured dancers in dog masks, which authorities claimed was offensive.
Despite his controversial past, Namewee has defended his right to artistic expression, asserting that his work aims to promote dialogue and social issues in Malaysia.
Current Investigation
As the investigation into Hsieh’s death unfolds, police are conducting a comprehensive review of the events leading up to her death. Authorities have taken statements from hotel staff and security personnel, as well as transport operators, including airport employees. Police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus stated, “The investigation is complex, but we are determined to uncover the truth. We urge anyone with information related to the case to come forward and assist police.”
Detectives await autopsy and toxicology reports to determine the official cause of Hsieh’s death. The investigation remains ongoing, with police working diligently to gather all necessary evidence.
