Sechelt School Board Raises Traffic and Safety Concerns Over Developments
The School District 46 Board of Education convened on October 28, 2023, to address two significant development referrals from the District of Sechelt. The discussions predominantly focused on concerns regarding traffic safety and potential long-term impacts on infrastructure near local schools.
One proposal under review involves a 116-unit townhouse development by Panorama Group situated on Cowrie Street, directly adjacent to Chatelech Secondary School. The developers cited “significant topographical challenges” as the reason for not proceeding with a condominium project, opting instead for townhouses designed to provide “missing middle” housing. These residences will feature rooftop decks and private yards aimed at families seeking long-term accommodation close to educational institutions and community amenities.
Trustees expressed appreciation for the draft response letters prepared by staff, which highlighted potential impacts on student safety and school capacity. Secretary-Treasurer Nick remarked on the condition of Shorncliffe Road, stating, “Shorncliffe really does need some love.” He further noted that if the board’s response could spur improvements, it would be highly beneficial for the community.
Infrastructure and Safety Concerns Addressed
The board also reviewed the Sawarne Lands master plan, which proposes rezoning for townhouses and cluster housing both west and east of the Silverstone Care Facility. According to the District’s report, the plan includes commitments for “significant park land dedications adding up to 4 hectares,” along with a conceptual road network designed to accommodate future growth.
Trustees emphasized the importance of early collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, particularly concerning traffic impact assessments. The board unanimously voted to send its feedback to the District of Sechelt, advocating for proactive planning measures that prioritize student safety and readiness of schools as the community continues to expand.
With Sechelt experiencing ongoing growth, the School District 46 Board remains committed to ensuring that infrastructure developments align with the needs of local students and families.
