Alberta Celebrates 2024 Inspiration Awards for Violence Prevention Efforts
The Government of Alberta has announced the recipients of the 2024 Inspiration Awards, recognizing the significant contributions made by individuals and organizations in the province toward preventing and reducing family, sexual, and gender-based violence. This initiative aims to honor those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to fostering a safer community.
In a media release, Searle Turton, Minister of Children and Family Services, expressed pride in celebrating the ten award recipients. “The Inspiration Awards celebrate Alberta’s unsung heroes dedicated to reducing and preventing violence and abuse,” he stated. The awards serve as a platform for acknowledging various efforts, including advocacy, research, education programs, and innovative technologies that contribute to community safety.
Highlighting Community Efforts
These awards align with Alberta’s broader initiative, Building on our Strengths, a ten-year strategy aimed at ending gender-based violence. The strategy emphasizes the importance of grassroots involvement in effecting change. Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, remarked, “At the heart of our ten-year strategy is the belief that change begins with people.” She further noted that the Inspiration Awards promote the values of standing up and speaking out to help others, reinforcing the collective effort to create a safer environment for all Albertans.
The award categories include:
– Emerging Excellence Award
– Collaborative Partnerships Award
– Equity and Community Empowerment Award
– Indigenous Leadership and Initiatives Award
– Research and Innovation Award
– Lifetime Journey Award
A comprehensive list detailing the accomplishments of each award recipient is available on the Government of Alberta’s official website.
Support Resources for Violence Victims
In addition to recognizing these commendable efforts, the province emphasizes the availability of support for anyone affected by family violence or abuse. Individuals in immediate danger are encouraged to call 911. For confidential assistance, the Family Violence Information Line can be reached at 310-1818, offering support 24/7 in over 170 languages, including all Indigenous languages spoken in Canada. Additional resources can be found online at alberta.ca/safetychat, with a full list of services available at alberta.ca/familyviolence.
By honoring those dedicated to preventing violence and abuse, the Government of Alberta underscores its commitment to fostering a culture of safety and support for all individuals within the province.
