Canadiens Face Challenges Following Newhook’s Injury, St-Louis Responds
The Montreal Canadiens announced that forward Alex Newhook will be sidelined for the next four months due to injury. This significant loss comes as Newhook had become a crucial player for the team, especially on the power play, following the departures of Christian Dvorak and Joel Armia. In light of this development, head coach Martin St-Louis has laid out a plan to address Newhook’s absence during shorthanded situations.
St-Louis intends to rely on Nick Suzuki and Joe Veleno to fill the gap left by Newhook. This strategy raises concerns about its sustainability over the long term. While Suzuki, the team captain, is known for his capability in shorthanded scenarios, this new responsibility may necessitate a reduction in his even-strength playing time. Such a shift could be detrimental, particularly as increased shorthanded play may heighten his risk of injury, despite his reputation for resilience.
Veleno, on the other hand, appears to be a more logical choice for the role. His advanced defensive statistics indicate he can effectively contribute to the team’s defensive efforts. Nevertheless, Veleno has faced challenges this season, and there have been discussions about possibly removing him from the lineup altogether. As it stands, he is the most viable option available, having successfully played in this role previously. Yet, questions remain about whether the team should fully commit to this approach.
The Canadiens are in urgent need of reinforcements to address their numerical disadvantage. The organization has shown interest in David Kämpf, who could fulfill several requirements, including alleviating some of the pressure on Suzuki. The need for additional players becomes increasingly pressing, especially if more regulars sustain injuries.
In a related note, Jared Davidson will make his debut with the Canadiens tonight after being overlooked three times in the draft, once in the WHL and twice in the NHL. This milestone holds significant personal importance for Davidson, who expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by his family throughout his journey in hockey.
As the Canadiens navigate this challenging period, the effectiveness of St-Louis’s strategy will be crucial. The team’s ability to adapt and find suitable replacements will determine their performance in the coming months. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further adjustments as the season progresses.
