Walsh Judges Global Dance Talent at IDO World Championships

Sherry Walsh is currently judging dancers from around the globe at the International Dance Organization’s World Championships in Italy. The event showcases approximately 2,400 dancers from 36 countries, reflecting a diverse array of talent and passion for dance. Walsh, a former dance studio owner from Sault Ste. Marie, has built a reputation as a national judge for Canada since 2016, bringing her expertise to competitions in countries like Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

In a recent interview, Walsh shared her experience, stating, “When something is good, the time flies.” Her enthusiasm is evident as she prepares to assess various performances, including solos, duos, and group formations across multiple styles such as improvisation and show dance. As one of only nine judges at the prestigious event, she is poised to evaluate participants ranging in age from just seven to fifty years old.

Commitment to Excellence in Dance

Walsh emphasizes the importance of experience in her role as a judge. She noted, “You can’t be a great judge if you haven’t had the experience of working with all the different age groups.” Many of her fellow judges share a similar background, having owned their own dance studios, which adds depth to their assessments. The atmosphere at the championships is filled with camaraderie and goodwill, transcending linguistic barriers. “Everybody understands a smile,” Walsh remarked. “Just being immersed in that atmosphere just raises your heart.”

While judging, communication with dancers, coaches, and trainers is strictly off-limits, allowing judges to focus entirely on the performances. Meal breaks offer a rare opportunity for Walsh to converse with her peers, albeit only about non-dance topics. This rule reinforces the integrity of the judging process, ensuring that evaluations remain unbiased.

A Celebration of Global Dance Culture

Walsh, who was inducted into the 2019 Sault Ste. Marie Walk of Fame, finds inspiration in the sense of unity among competitors. She is impressed by how dancers from diverse backgrounds come together, driven by a shared passion for their art. “Everybody comes together for the simple and common purpose and that’s to share their love, passion, and joy for the art of dance,” she said, highlighting the event’s role in fostering international relationships.

As she prepares to witness the talent on display at the championships, Walsh is reminded of the beauty of dance as a universal language. “Nothing else matters. We’re all there to appreciate the excellence of each other,” she concluded. This week, as she judges the World Championships, Walsh continues to embody the spirit of collaboration and celebration that defines the dance community.

After closing her studio, Walsh taught part-time at Studio Dance Arts until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, she serves as a physician assistant to Dr. Christine Macie, balancing her medical career with her passion for dance. Her unique journey highlights the multifaceted nature of talent and dedication in both the arts and healthcare.
