Sherry Walsh Celebrates Global Dance Talent at World Championships

Sherry Walsh, a prominent figure in the dance community, is currently judging at the International Dance Organization’s (IDO) World Championships in Italy. The event attracts over 2,400 dancers from 36 countries, showcasing a diverse range of talent and styles. Walsh, a former dance studio owner from Sault Ste. Marie, has dedicated her time to evaluating dancers since becoming a national judge representing Canada in 2016.

The World Championships, which feature competitors aged between seven and 50, offer a platform for various dance genres, including solos, duos, groups, improvisation, and show dance. Walsh is one of nine judges tasked with assessing performances during this extensive event. Reflecting on her experience, she noted, “When something is good, the time flies.” Walsh’s enthusiasm for the talent on display is evident, as she remarked, “The level of talent is just over the roof.”

Global Unity Through Dance

Walsh’s journey as a judge has taken her across Europe to competitions in Poland, Germany, and Prague, expanding her perspective on dance and cultural exchange. The camaraderie among dancers from different nations has left a lasting impression on her. “Everybody comes together for the simple and common purpose, and that’s to share their love, passion, and joy for the art of dance,” she stated.

Despite language barriers, Walsh highlights how gestures such as smiles, handshakes, and applause transcend communication. “Just being immersed in that atmosphere raises your heart. It’s so awesome to see it,” she added. This spirit of goodwill is a central theme at the championships, where the focus remains on appreciating each other’s excellence rather than competition.

Judges at the event are prohibited from discussing dance with dancers, coaches, or trainers, allowing them to maintain impartiality. However, they can share conversations about various subjects during meal breaks. Walsh emphasized that many of her fellow judges have also owned dance studios, providing them with valuable experience across different age groups.

From Dance Studio to Judging Panel

Before taking on her role as a judge, Walsh taught part-time at Studio Dance Arts until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, she works as a physician assistant to Dr. Christine Macie, balancing her medical career with her passion for dance. In 2019, she was inducted into the Sault Ste. Marie Walk of Fame, recognizing her contributions to the local dance community.

As the World Championships progress, Walsh’s commitment to fostering a love for dance remains strong. Through her role as a judge, she continues to inspire both performers and fellow judges alike, proving that the art of dance can unite people from all walks of life.
