Google Pixel Phones Enable Satellite Texting in Europe

Customers in Europe can now send emergency SMS messages through satellite technology, thanks to a new service from Orange France. Starting December 11, 2025, users of the Google Pixel 9 and Google Pixel 10 smartphones will be able to utilize satellite texting capabilities, marking a significant advancement in mobile communication.

Service Launch and Features

This initiative positions Orange as the first European operator to offer direct-to-device satellite texting, facilitated by Skylo’s technology. The service will initially be available to customers on Orange’s 5G and 5G+ networks residing in mainland France.

Users will have the ability to send and receive SMS messages via satellite, as well as share their geolocation. This feature is particularly valuable in emergency situations where conventional mobile or WiFi coverage fails. For the first six months, the service is complimentary. After this introductory period, customers will be charged €5 per month to maintain access to satellite texting.

Understanding Satellite Technology

While the launch is promising, potential users should consider the technical aspects of Skylo’s service. The technology relies on geostationary satellites positioned approximately 36,000 km above the Earth. This distance results in higher latency, estimated at around 500-600 milliseconds. Although this latency is generally acceptable for urgent text messaging, it may not meet the demands of applications requiring faster connections.

In contrast, services like Starlink, which utilize Low Earth Orbit satellites situated between 160 to 2,000 km above the Earth, offer significantly lower latency—ranging from 6 to 30 milliseconds. However, it is important to note that the satellite texting feature will primarily serve emergency needs, where immediate high-speed internet is less critical than reliable communication.

As this service becomes available, it represents a notable step forward in ensuring connectivity for users in remote areas, enhancing safety and communication capabilities in emergencies. The combination of advanced technology and practical application could pave the way for future innovations in mobile communication systems.
