Summit Pacific College (SPC) in Abbotsford has appointed Andrew Evans as its new president, effective next summer. The announcement was made on November 20, 2023, marking a significant transition for the institution as Dave Demchuk retires after leading the college since 2007.

Evans brings a wealth of experience to the role, having been part of SPC since 2010 as the director of the youth ministry program. His extensive background includes over a decade of pastoral ministry before joining the college. He completed his undergraduate studies at SPC, which was formerly known as Western Pentecostal Bible College, and furthered his education with a master’s degree from Trinity Western University and Canadian Pentecostal Seminary. In 2016, he earned a doctorate of ministry from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, focusing on emerging generations.

Extensive Search for Leadership

The selection process for the new president was thorough, with the college consulting hundreds of individuals to shape the job profile. A number of candidates were interviewed before the board unanimously chose Evans. Debbie Tonn, a member of SPC’s board of governors, highlighted the significance of the decision, stating, “Throughout this process, we engaged with strong candidates – each bringing meaningful experience, character, and a heart for ministry.”

Tonn continued, “With much prayer, discernment, and the thoughtful input of our community, the committee unanimously recognized Andrew Evans as the leader who carries both a deep love for Summit and a proven commitment to Christ-centred leadership.” She noted that Evans has gained the trust of alumni, partners, and especially students during his time at the college.

“During his time at Summit, Andrew Evans has proven himself to be a professor of the highest calibre,” stated Demchuk. “He is also a capable administrator and a pastor committed to developing a generation of Pentecostal leaders with a passionate spirituality.”

A Rich History and Future Vision

Founded in 1941 as the British Columbia Bible Institute in Victoria, SPC has undergone several transformations. It moved to North Vancouver in 1951 and became Western Pentecostal Bible College in 1961. In 1974, the college established its current location at 35235 Straiton Rd., Abbotsford.

As Evans prepares to take the helm, he faces the challenge of continuing the college’s legacy while also adapting to the needs of modern students. His appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for the institution, which remains committed to its mission of fostering spiritual leadership and academic excellence.
