A third annual Winter Market is set to take place at École Gabrielle-Roy, the only Francophone public school in Surrey, British Columbia. Scheduled for December 13, 2023, the event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school located at 6887 132 Street in Newton. This vibrant community gathering aims to celebrate local creativity and entrepreneurship.

The Marché d’hiver has seen significant growth this year, expanding from 40 to 60 exhibitors. Most of the vendors are Francophone local artists and artisans, and students will also showcase their entrepreneurial projects. According to Émilie Carlen, public affairs advisor with the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique (School District 93), this year’s market promises to be a unique experience for attendees.

Visitors can look forward to browsing an array of handmade gifts and local products. The event will feature food trucks and opportunities for festive photos with Santa, creating a lively atmosphere while supporting the school’s fundraising initiatives. Vendors rent tables for a fee, with all proceeds directed towards the school’s projects.

Supporting Francophone Education and Community

The Conseil scolaire francophone employs over 1,200 staff members, establishing it as one of the largest Francophone employers in Western Canada. École Gabrielle-Roy serves students from kindergarten through Grade 12, focusing on developing cultural identity while fostering a strong Francophone community.

In a translated statement from the school’s website, it emphasizes its commitment to providing an excellent French-language public education that promotes mastery of the French language. Additionally, the school offers students the opportunity to become proficient in English, further enriching their educational experience.

As the Winter Market approaches, excitement builds within the community, highlighting the importance of local initiatives in supporting educational and cultural development. This event not only encourages local entrepreneurship but also strengthens the bonds within the Francophone community in Surrey.
