Vanguart’s Black Hole Tourbillon Revolutionizes Watch Design with Joystick
The luxury watch industry has taken a bold step forward with the introduction of the Vanguart Black Hole Tourbillon, a timepiece that replaces the traditional crown with an innovative joystick system. This reimagining of time adjustment allows users to engage more interactively with their watches, transforming what has often been a mundane task into a tactile experience.
Innovative Design Features
At the heart of the Black Hole Tourbillon lies a striking dial featuring what Vanguart describes as a “levitating flying tourbillon.” This stunning visual effect is achieved through the caliber T-1701 mechanism, which creates an illusion of weightlessness while ensuring precision through its 775 hand-assembled components. The design features three concentric tiers of titanium, which not only enhance the aesthetic but also allow the tourbillon to take center stage without distraction.
Time is displayed through a linear system, separating hours and minutes into their own concentric rings that frame the tourbillon. This unique layout enhances both functionality and visual appeal, presenting time as part of a mechanical ballet rather than merely a series of numbers. The restrained design approach gives the tourbillon space to breathe, with painted indications that offer contrast while maintaining legibility.
Seamless Integration and Emotional Engineering
The Vanguart team has prioritized seamlessness in the watch’s architecture, eliminating visible screws and fasteners to create a flowing geometric design. The case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium in the base model, weighing just 80 grams, while rose and white gold versions reach 173 grams. Despite the differences in materials, the aesthetic remains consistent across all three limited editions.
The joystick system, integrated into the case design, allows users to intuitively push forward to advance time or pull back to reverse it. This interaction is described as “emotional engineering,” highlighting Vanguart’s commitment to enhancing user experience. The resistance and feedback from the joystick elevate time-setting into an engaging activity rather than a mere function.
Vanguart’s design philosophy shifts the focus of luxury watchmaking from technical complexity to user experience. The 42-hour power reserve indicator runs vertically along the case, providing an instant visual gauge while keeping the overall dial uncluttered.
Production and Material Choices
Vanguart has limited production of the Black Hole Tourbillon to just eight pieces per material configuration: titanium, rose gold, and white gold. Each version features the same titanium dial, coated in silver or anthracite PVD, ensuring a cohesive look across the collection. The movements are treated with gold or silver PVD depending on the case material, further enhancing the visual consistency.
To complement the watch’s technical focus, Vanguart has opted for rubber straps over traditional leather or metal options, which could add unnecessary weight or detract from the modern design. The anthracite strap on titanium and white versions aligns beautifully with the gold cases, showcasing considered design decisions.
A New Era for Independent Watchmaking
Established in 2017, Vanguart is led by a team of seasoned professionals, including CEO Axel Leuenberger, who previously worked in R&D at APRP, and Chief Technical Officer Jeremy Frelechox, who spent 15 years at the same company. Their collective experience is evident in the Black Hole Tourbillon, which fuses high-complication watchmaking techniques with a fresh approach to user interaction.
The introduction of the joystick system is not merely a gimmick; it represents a significant rethinking of how users engage with mechanical timepieces. While it remains to be seen how this innovation will influence the broader watchmaking industry, the Black Hole Tourbillon stands as a testament to the potential for evolution in a centuries-old craft.
