Calgary’s Restaurant Scene Faces Losses as Popular Eateries Close
As November comes to an end, Calgary’s vibrant restaurant scene is experiencing significant changes with several notable closures. The challenges faced by the restaurant industry have resulted in both temporary and permanent shutdowns, marking a difficult period for local dining establishments. Among the affected venues are well-known chain restaurants and unique local spots, impacting both the culinary landscape and community dining options.
Applebee’s and The Moose and Poncho Bid Farewell
The popular chain restaurant, Applebee’s, has closed its last Calgary location at 388 Country Hills Blvd. NE. Initially reported as “permanently closed,” it has since been listed as “temporarily closed” on Google, leaving some uncertainty about its future. This change has sparked conversations among local patrons who hope for a revival of the familiar dining choice.
Another notable closure is The Moose and Poncho, a taco restaurant celebrated for its appearance on Guy Fieri’s television show. The establishment confirmed its closure due to escalating ingredient costs, stating, “Unfortunately, high prices in quality products forced us to close our doors. We are always focused on bringing the best to your plate, and our values come first before even thinking of lowering our standards.” Located at First Street Market – 1327 1st St. SW, this closure signifies a loss of a beloved local eatery known for its commitment to quality.
Murrieta’s Future Uncertain After 25 Years
In addition to these closures, Murrieta’s has announced that its downtown Calgary location at 808 1st St. SW will close in April 2026, after serving the community for 25 years. According to Ron Salverda, president and CEO of C.A. Restaurant Enterprises, the decision was driven by financial challenges, particularly the inability to secure a “fair and equitable” lease. Despite this setback, the restaurant is actively searching for a new location within Calgary and plans to keep its Canmore location operational.
The recent closures highlight the ongoing difficulties within the restaurant industry, a sector known for its volatility. As Calgary navigates these changes, the community is left to reflect on the loss of familiar dining experiences while remaining hopeful for new opportunities in the future.
