Edmonton Leads the Charge in Innovative Cancer Care Solutions
The landscape of cancer care in Alberta is undergoing a significant transformation, with advancements at the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) promising to change the lives of thousands facing a diagnosis. This year, more than 24,000 Albertans will hear the words, “You have cancer,” highlighting an urgent need for innovative treatments. Thanks to a community of dedicated supporters, a new era of treatment powered by immunotherapy is emerging, offering hope where traditional therapies have struggled.
Immunotherapy, particularly through cellular therapies like CAR-T, represents a groundbreaking shift in cancer treatment. By harnessing the body’s own immune system, these therapies aim to identify and eliminate cancer cells effectively. The CCI is at the forefront of this revolution, working diligently to bring these cutting-edge treatments from the laboratory to the clinic, driven by both research and generous community support.
Community Support Fuels Cancer Care Advancements
The transition from research to practical application requires substantial infrastructure, which is being built through the contributions of local donors and organizations. The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, for instance, has played a vital role through initiatives like its 50/50 raffle, which helps fund the necessary infrastructure to scale these medical breakthroughs. Their backing is crucial in achieving the goal of doubling clinical trials at the CCI, which includes establishing a specialized clinical trials unit and expanding the cancer pharmacy.
These investments ensure that doctors and researchers have the essential tools to bring innovative treatments, such as cellular therapies, to patients in Alberta. Typically, offering these treatments within a public health-care system is financially challenging, with commercial outsourcing costs reaching up to $500,000 USD per patient. To address this barrier, researchers at the CCI developed a local “point-of-care” manufacturing model that has yielded impressive results.
Revolutionary Treatment Options and Cost Savings
Clinical trials have demonstrated a remarkable 52% remission rate six months after therapy in complex cases. Moreover, this local manufacturing model allows the necessary treatments to be produced for approximately $54,000 per patient, a staggering 90% reduction in overall costs. As the process continues to scale, further reductions in costs are anticipated, making these life-saving therapies more accessible.
The rapid production capabilities of this model are also noteworthy. A 95% success rate in producing the necessary cells within a swift 10-day timeframe ensures that patients with aggressive cancers receive timely interventions, significantly improving their chances of survival. In the near future, the CCI aims to treat up to 120 patients each year who would otherwise lack access to these advanced therapies, allowing more Albertans to spend precious time with their loved ones.
The support from community partners, including the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, is essential for Alberta to maintain its leadership in pioneering cancer treatments. As the holiday season approaches, individuals are encouraged to consider their giving priorities, whether that means contributing to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or purchasing a 50/50 ticket. Every contribution plays a role in fueling life-changing research and building a pioneering system of care.
Together, the community is working towards a future where every Albertan facing cancer has the chance for more time, more moments, and a brighter future. As noted by Christy Holtby, vice-president of philanthropy at the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the collective effort is vital in ensuring that innovative cancer care continues to thrive in Edmonton and beyond.
