TransLink Plans Replacement of Historic Westham Island Bridge
TransLink is set to replace the historic Westham Island Bridge, which was constructed in 1910. This bridge spans the south arm of the Fraser River, connecting Ladner to Westham Island, an area primarily utilized for agriculture and featuring protected natural zones. As one of four vehicle bridges operated by TransLink, it stands out as the narrowest, measuring only 4.4 metres high and stretching 325 metres in length.
The existing structure, a single-lane, wood-deck truss bridge, has been facing accelerated deterioration. Over the past decade, TransLink has invested in maintaining and rehabilitating the bridge’s aging components. However, its design limits its lifespan, as it was originally intended to last 60 years but is now 115 years old. To address ongoing safety and operational concerns, TransLink plans to initiate repairs starting in early 2026, which will include enhancements to the swing span, timber piers, and overall structure.
Challenges of the Current Structure
The Westham Island Bridge presents several challenges due to its age and design limitations. It has low clearances, cannot accommodate the weight of semi-trucks essential for supporting local agricultural businesses, and lacks pedestrian and cycling pathways. Additionally, its swing-span mechanism can freeze during cold conditions, disrupting marine traffic and requiring lengthy detours for vessels such as fishing boats and houseboats.
This past summer, TransLink sought proposals from design and engineering teams for the bridge’s replacement. The authority received nine submissions, and it expects to award the contract by the end of 2025. The selected consultant will collaborate with TransLink and the City of Delta to develop the new crossing’s design, conduct technical investigations, and facilitate public consultations.
TransLink has allocated $2 million for rehabilitation work on the existing bridge in 2026 and $3 million for the planning and concept design of the new bridge. While no timeline or estimated construction costs for the new crossing have been established, the planning phase is crucial for ensuring a smooth transition.
Historical Context and Future Developments
Before the construction of the Westham Island Bridge, the area relied on ferry services dating back to the 1800s. The bridge has also been featured in various film and television productions, adding to its historical significance.
In addition to the Westham Island Bridge, TransLink operates other major crossings, including the Knight Street Bridge, the Golden Ears Bridge, and the original Pattullo Bridge. Notably, the Pattullo Bridge is set to be decommissioned in early 2026 once the new replacement bridge opens to traffic, reducing TransLink’s operational responsibilities.
Looking ahead, the provincial government and Vancouver Airport Authority are also considering a replacement for the aging Moray Bridge, which is vital for linking Richmond’s main island to Vancouver International Airport. This bridge, with two lanes of eastbound-only traffic, plays a critical role in regional connectivity.
As TransLink moves forward with plans for the Westham Island Bridge replacement, the focus remains on enhancing safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency for the community and its agricultural sector.
