Google Explains 15W Limitation for Pixel 10 Pro Wireless Charging

Google has confirmed that the new Pixel 10 Pro smartphone will be limited to 15W wireless charging, a notable difference from the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which supports up to 25W. This limitation has raised questions among consumers regarding the device’s capabilities, especially given that all Pixel 10 series smartphones support the Qi2 wireless charging standard.

The Pixel 10 Pro, alongside the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, are restricted to 15W charging speeds, while the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL can achieve faster rates due to its compatibility with the Qi2.2 standard. A spokesperson for Google addressed these concerns in a statement to Android Central, citing heat dissipation as a key factor in the decision.

Heat Management and Device Size

According to Google, the larger size of the Pixel 9 Pro XL allows for better heat management compared to the Pixel 10 Pro. Although both smartphones feature vapor chamber cooling technology, the company determined that it was insufficient to support the higher charging speeds on the smaller model.

The spokesperson did not elaborate on the differences in wired charging capabilities; however, the Pixel 9 Pro XL supports 45W wired charging, which enables it to reach a 70% charge in just 30 minutes. In contrast, the Pixel 10 Pro can attain only 50% in the same timeframe, suggesting that heat management considerations extend to its wired charging performance as well.

Comparative Technology in the Market

This limitation raises eyebrows, particularly when considering the advancements made by various Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Numerous smaller devices from these companies boast capabilities of 100W+ wired and 50W wireless charging. This disparity highlights a potential gap in Google’s technology compared to its competitors, even though these companies often utilize proprietary charging technologies.

Despite this, the introduction of magnets in the Pixel 10 series is seen as a positive step forward. However, the absence of the previously available Battery Share feature has disappointed some users.
