Western University Celebrates Orientation Week for Class of 2029

Western University has welcomed over 6,500 new students as part of its Orientation Week, a vibrant series of events designed to integrate first-year students into the university community. From September 1-7, 2025, incoming students participate in activities that foster connections with their peers, the local community, and the university itself. Events include concerts, games, and opportunities for community volunteering, providing a lively introduction to campus life.

Building a Supportive Community

Western’s Student Experience and Housing units, in collaboration with the University Students’ Council, have organized a range of programming to assist new students. This includes Care Hubs, strategically placed help stations where volunteers are available to answer questions and provide essential supplies, such as water and snacks. Mental health counsellors are also present at these hubs, underscoring the university’s commitment to student well-being.

In addition to in-person support, an orientation session catered to graduate students is available both in-person and virtually. This support extends beyond Orientation Week; Western offers various services aimed at easing the transition to university life. These include online modules, peer mentorship programs, and academic assistance through the Learning and Writing Centre.

The Parr Centre for Thriving also plays a crucial role by funding initiatives like Move Your Mood, which focuses on mental health and wellness throughout the academic year. A new orientation event for families of incoming students gained significant interest, leading to over 1,500 registrations and prompting the university to hold two sessions to accommodate demand.

Engaging with the Community Through OServes

One of the highlights of Orientation Week is the Orientation Serves (OServes) event. This initiative connects first-year students with the London community through various community-engaged learning activities. Participants have the opportunity to contribute their time and skills to local non-profit organizations. Activities range from creating cards for pediatric patients to collaborating with Special Olympics athletes and producing promotional content for a computer donation campaign.

Tradition also plays a significant role in OWeek, particularly through support for the Western Mustangs football team. Following a victory against the Guelph Gryphons on August 31, the Mustangs are set to compete against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on September 6 at 17:00 at Western Alumni Stadium. All students can attend regular season home games across various sports for free, fostering school spirit and community involvement.

Overall, Western University’s Orientation Week is designed to ensure that new students feel welcomed and supported as they embark on their academic journeys. With a combination of social events, community service, and comprehensive support systems, the university aims to create a positive and inclusive environment for all.
