Concordia Revamps French Program to Boost Language Proficiency

Concordia Continuing Education (CCE) has launched an updated French learning program called French Communication Essentials, which aligns with the Échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence en français, Quebec’s official framework for assessing adult French language proficiency. This initiative aims to enhance practical communication skills for learners at five different levels, ranging from elementary to high intermediate.
Program Redesign Focuses on Real-World Applications
Formerly known as French Conversation, the redesigned program emphasizes equipping participants with language skills applicable in various contexts. Each course is structured to facilitate a gradual increase in competency for both speaking and understanding French. As Sherry Blok, senior director of development for executive and professional programs, stated, “We wanted to ensure our courses truly meet the needs of learners looking to improve their French communication in real contexts.”
To achieve this, CCE collaborated closely with Réussir en français at Concordia, ensuring the program is both relevant and accessible. Over a period of 10 weeks, participants engage in in-person classes that promote a collaborative environment conducive to steady progression. Complementary self-directed activities reinforce skills learned in class, preparing learners for real-world communication.
Support for Integration and Professional Growth
The French Communication Essentials program is designed with clear outcomes, aiming to increase language proficiency for social and professional settings while offering cultural insights to help learners connect with Quebec society. This makes it especially beneficial for professionals operating in French-speaking environments.
The program is also open to Concordia faculty and staff, aligning with the university’s commitment to fostering a bilingual campus culture. Eligible faculty and staff can take advantage of tuition waivers, while students who have previously completed courses at Concordia will receive a 10 percent discount on tuition fees.
Through its alignment with the Échelle québécoise, learners can accurately assess their proficiency levels, which is crucial for both professional and academic advancement. The program centers on thematic topics that facilitate practical communication, enabling participants to not only learn French but also apply it effectively.
Prospective students can register for a free webinar titled “From Frustration to Fluency: A New Approach to Learning French” to learn more about the program. This revamped initiative represents Concordia’s dedication to enhancing language education and supporting its community in achieving linguistic proficiency.
