Nazareth Academy Student Achieves Semifinalist Status in National Merit Program

Sam Wilda, a student at Nazareth Academy in Western Springs, has been recognized as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program following his outstanding performance on the 2024 PSAT. Wilda achieved a perfect score, placing him among the top achievers in a competitive nationwide pool. This recognition reflects his academic excellence as less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors earn this prestigious distinction.
The National Merit Scholarship Program began with approximately 1.5 million entrants, with only about 16,000 students advancing to the semifinalist stage. Wilda now stands among the elite group of candidates, representing the highest scorers in each state. Of these semifinalists, approximately 15,000 are anticipated to advance in the competition for the scholarships, which will be awarded in March 2024.
Beyond his academic achievements, Wilda is also a talented student-athlete. He is a record holder and an IHSA state qualifier for the Roadrunners boys golf program. His commitment to excellence extends to extracurricular activities, as he is a member of both the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society, as well as Mu Alpha Theta, an organization dedicated to mathematics.
Wilda has expressed ambitions of pursuing a business degree following his graduation from Nazareth Academy. His achievements highlight not only his academic and athletic prowess but also his commitment to personal growth and leadership within his school community.
As the announcement of the National Merit Scholarships approaches, Wilda’s recognition as a semifinalist serves as an inspiration to fellow students and exemplifies the potential for success through hard work and dedication.
