Canada’s Public Health Agency to Oversee Vaccine Injury Program
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) will assume control of the federal Vaccine Injury Support Program following concerns about the program’s management. This decision follows an investigation launched by the federal health department into the third-party company, Oxaro, which has been administering the program.
The Vaccine Injury Support Program was established in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide financial compensation for individuals who experienced adverse effects after receiving vaccines approved by Health Canada. The program has been a crucial component of the national vaccination strategy, aiming to bolster public confidence in vaccination efforts.
Health Minister Marjorie Michel‘s office confirmed that a funding agreement with Oxaro will conclude on March 31, 2026. Following the termination of this agreement, PHAC will take over the management and administration of the program. The minister’s office emphasized that further details regarding the transition will be made available as they develop.
The decision to transition oversight comes amid increasing scrutiny of how the program has been operated by Oxaro. Concerns were raised about the efficiency and effectiveness of claims processing, as well as the overall handling of the program. As the investigation continues, the government is exploring alternative delivery methods to ensure that individuals who sustain vaccine-related injuries receive timely and adequate support.
The move to bring the program under direct government oversight reflects an ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in public health initiatives, especially those related to vaccination. The PHAC aims to enhance the program’s accessibility and responsiveness to the needs of Canadians.
In summary, the transition of the Vaccine Injury Support Program to the Public Health Agency of Canada marks a significant shift in how vaccine-related injuries will be managed in the country. With the government taking a more active role, stakeholders are hopeful for improvements in the program’s operation and support for affected individuals.
