Local Steak Dinner Raises $2,600 for Kidney Foundation
On September 12, the Windsor Tavern in Vankleek Hill hosted a charity steak dinner that successfully raised $2,600 for the Kidney Foundation of Canada. The event was organized by Don Dubois, who has a personal connection to the cause as a family member is currently awaiting a kidney transplant after enduring three years of dialysis.
Community Engagement and Awareness
Attendees enjoyed a night of char-broiled steaks while engaging with volunteers from the Kidney Foundation. This interaction provided an opportunity for participants to learn about kidney disease risk factors and prevention strategies. Local band 50 Proof entertained the crowd, enhancing the evening’s atmosphere.
Volunteers Stéphane and Sara Goyer highlighted a critical aspect of kidney health: many individuals do not exhibit symptoms until they have lost a significant portion of their kidney function. This reality affects approximately one in ten Canadians. They emphasized the importance of consulting with medical professionals and undergoing regular health check-ups.
Currently, over 60,000 Canadians live with some form of kidney disease. Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, heart issues, and strokes. Additionally, certain ethnic groups, including Indigenous, African/Caribbean, Asian, Hispanic, and Pacific Island descent, are at an increased risk for kidney disease.
Support Services Offered by the Kidney Foundation
The Goyers provided informative handouts detailing the various services offered by the Kidney Foundation. These services include educational resources, short-term financial assistance for medical expenses, and a peer support program for those affected by kidney disease.
For those seeking more information, the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s website offers a wealth of resources and support options. The community’s engagement in this fundraising event not only provided financial assistance but also raised awareness about the importance of kidney health and preventive measures.
