Chris MacPhee Retires After Transformative 14-Year Tenure

Chris MacPhee, the superintendent of Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS), has announced his retirement effective December 31, 2023, concluding an impactful 14-year tenure in Canmore. MacPhee began his teaching career over 30 years ago in a remote fly-in town in Yukon, situated 160 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. His leadership in the Bow Valley has been marked by significant advancements in educational programs and community engagement.

Reflecting on his decision, MacPhee expressed a mix of emotions, stating, “There’s a bittersweetness to it but it’s time. I’ve worked sunup to sundown for 14 years, seven days a week for this school division, and I would’ve had it no other way.” While he has cherished his role, he looks forward to pursuing personal passions in retirement, including learning Spanish and carpentry.

Legacy of Innovation and Community Engagement

MacPhee’s first priority upon joining CRPS in 2012 was to immerse himself in the local culture and understand the community he would lead. According to Brian Callaghan, CRPS board chair, MacPhee’s “curiosity” about the demographics and needs of the community has driven his initiatives. Callaghan noted, “[He’s] very future-oriented and focused on the best for students, both academically and in exploring opportunities in industry and trades.”

Under MacPhee’s leadership, several key programs were established, including the Outdoor Learning Centre, which has grown from serving 17 students to nearly 4,000 annually. MacPhee played a pivotal role in launching Alpenglow School, a testament to his commitment to enhancing educational resources in the region.

“Those are some really proud moments,” Callaghan remarked about the modernization projects at Canmore Collegiate High School and the Banff elementary and community high schools. The physical improvements made during MacPhee’s tenure have created welcoming environments for students and families.

Another significant achievement during his time was the Collier Park Development project, which aims to provide 20 housing units for CRPS staff, addressing a critical need for affordable housing in the area. MacPhee emphasized the importance of opportunities for both students and teaching staff, stating that the passion of the educators has a direct impact on academic success.

Personal Impact and Future Plans

MacPhee’s own experiences as a student with learning disabilities have profoundly influenced his educational philosophy. He pursued a career as an educational psychologist to advocate for diverse learning methods, believing that “it all doesn’t have to be done on paper.” His approach fosters an inclusive environment where students can express their knowledge in various ways.

As he prepares for retirement, MacPhee remains committed to the community. “This has been an amazing opportunity… and the education system that even past retirement I will care deeply about,” he stated, indicating a willingness to remain involved whenever needed.

Callaghan expressed gratitude for MacPhee’s contributions, stating, “He has looked after all of our communities, and it’s been a wonderful time to serve in governance with him.” The search for a new superintendent is currently underway, with the board of trustees considering the future direction of CRPS.

MacPhee’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for CRPS and the Bow Valley community. His legacy of dedication to student success and community involvement will be felt long after his last day in office.
