Magnitude-6.1 Earthquake Strikes Papua, Causing Damage but No Casualties

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck Indonesia’s easternmost region of Papua early on Friday, resulting in significant damage in the coastal town of Nabire. Fortunately, initial reports indicate that no casualties have occurred.
The quake, which occurred at approximately 05:30 local time, caused at least two houses and the main bridge in Nabire to collapse. Additionally, a government office, a church, and an airport experienced minor damage. Suharyanto, the chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, confirmed these details in a video message, assuring the public that “overall, the situation is safe and under control.”
Many residents fled their homes or moved to higher ground when the earthquake struck, according to agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari. Telecommunications in Nabire and several surrounding areas were disrupted immediately following the quake.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake was centered approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of Nabire at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency has indicated that there is no tsunami threat, as the earthquake’s epicenter was located inland.
Nabire has previously experienced severe seismic activity; in February 2004, a powerful quake resulted in the deaths of 30 individuals and damaged hundreds of homes. Another earthquake later that same year in November caused an additional 32 fatalities.
Indonesia, home to over 280 million people, is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area noted for its high seismic activity. The country frequently faces earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, a consequence of its position on major tectonic fault lines.
As recovery efforts begin in Nabire, local authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage and providing assistance to those affected. The situation remains under close observation, with officials committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
