Prince Albert’s Two Miles for Mary Seeks $45,000 for Seniors

The annual fundraising event, Two Miles for Mary, is set to return in Prince Albert on September 26, 2024, aiming to raise $45,000 to support transportation services for seniors in the community. This year marks the 38th edition of the event, which will feature a live radiothon coupled with an in-person pancake breakfast at the Prince Albert Heritage Centre.
According to Kayla Pollock, fundraising coordinator for the Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre, the event highlights the importance of accessible transportation for seniors. “The event originated with a lady named Mary, who was known for helping seniors within a two-mile radius of the city,” Pollock explained. “The name Two Miles for Mary reflects this mission to provide safe, friendly, and affordable transportation for seniors.”
Impact of the Transportation Program
The funds raised during the event will specifically benefit the Community Service Centre’s senior transportation program, which facilitated over 6,000 trips in the previous year, representing a five percent increase from the year before. Pollock emphasized how crucial this service is for maintaining the independence and quality of life of seniors. “For many, this service is vital for getting to doctor’s appointments and social outings,” she noted. “It allows them to stay connected within the community.”
Last year’s radiothon successfully raised approximately $30,000, and organizers are optimistic about surpassing that total this time around. Pollock expressed a desire to expand the service, including adding another vehicle and potentially extending hours to provide evening transportation. “Every little donation helps keep the service running,” she stated. “We want to ensure our seniors continue to have access to this essential service.”
Event Details and Participation
The pancake breakfast, sponsored by Co-op, is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations and can challenge local businesses to match their contributions. The radiothon will be broadcast on both 900 CKBI and Power 99 FM, enhancing outreach efforts this year.
Pollock has been proactive in promoting the event through additional radio spots, digital posters placed at the Gateway Mall, and outreach to local businesses. For those unable to attend in person, donations can be made online at www.pacsc.com, under the Two Miles for Mary tab. Contributions can also be sent by cheque or through e-transfer to [email protected]. A new Canada Helps page has been established, allowing for both one-time and monthly donations.
Community support is vital to the success of this initiative. Donations can be made during the radiothon by calling 306-763-MARY (6279) or by attending the breakfast. “The seniors are a big part of this community,” Pollock remarked. “If we all step in together, we can keep the service going and keep it strong for Prince Albert.”
