The District of Saanich is initiating a unique opportunity for local poets by seeking its first-ever Community Poet and Youth Community Poet. This initiative aims to connect, inspire, and reflect the community’s spirit through the art of poetry. Both positions are designed for individuals who are passionate about integrating poetry into public life and are open to collaborating on various projects, performances, and community events.

The successful candidate for the Community Poet role will serve a two-year term, while the Youth Community Poet will have a term of one to two years. According to Coun. Mena Westhaver, chair of Saanich’s Arts, Culture & Community Wellbeing Advisory Committee, “This is a positive way for the district to engage our local talent and encourage more poetry in community life.” Westhaver expressed anticipation for how the selected poets will invite reflection and inspire creativity, enhancing the overall sense of community through their work.

The Greater Victoria Public Library is actively supporting this initiative, with CEO Maureen Sawa stating, “Poetry brings communities together and sparks imagination. We’re excited to help highlight the District of Saanich’s new Community Poet and Youth Community Poet program.” The library’s involvement underscores the importance of poetry in fostering community connections and artistic expression.

Interested applicants can submit their applications until October 31, 2025. As an added incentive, all candidates will be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift card to Bolen Books, promoting local businesses while encouraging participation in the program. The District of Saanich particularly encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply, ensuring the program reflects the rich perspectives and experiences of all community members.

Interested individuals can find submission guidelines and additional information about the Saanich Community Poets Program by visiting the official website at saanich.ca/EN/main/parks-recreation-community/arts/community-arts-projects/community-poets-program.html. This initiative represents not only a commitment to the arts in Saanich but also an opportunity for local poets to make a meaningful impact on their community through their craft.
