Simcoe Students Face Suspension Over Incomplete Vaccination Records

Students in Grades 11 and 12 in the Simcoe region may face suspension if they do not complete their vaccination records by September 23, 2025. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has announced that it will enforce these suspension orders in accordance with the Immunization School Pupils Act (ISPA). This legislation mandates that health units maintain accurate vaccination records for all students and take action, including suspensions, for those who do not comply.
As of September 15, 2025, there are more than 2,700 outstanding vaccination records within the district. To assist students and their families in meeting these requirements, the Health Unit is providing drop-in clinics at various locations. These clinics are available in Barrie, Midland, Orillia, Cookstown, Collingwood, Huntsville, and Gravenhurst.
Vaccination Clinics Offer Support
During the week leading up to the enforcement date, the clinics will operate on the following schedule: Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. This initiative aims to ensure that students can receive their required immunizations in a timely manner.
In addition to the clinics, students can also receive their vaccinations through their healthcare providers. However, it is essential that they report this information to the Health Unit. Reporting can be done easily online at smdhu.org/lmmsOnline or by contacting the Health Unit directly at 705-721-7520, ext. 8827 during weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Importance of Immunization
Keeping vaccination records up to date is crucial for the health and safety of the student population. It provides essential protection against serious, vaccine-preventable diseases and helps mitigate the risk of outbreaks in schools. Moreover, having accurate records enables the Health Unit to respond swiftly to any emerging health threats.
The enforcement of these suspension orders underscores the importance of public health measures in educational settings. By ensuring students are properly immunized, the Health Unit aims to promote a safer environment for learning and interaction among students.
