A nine-year-old boy named Timo is undergoing a challenging battle against cancer, prompting his family from Nelson, British Columbia, to launch a fundraising campaign. Currently receiving treatment at B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Timo’s family seeks support to cover essential expenses such as travel, accommodation, and daily needs during this arduous journey.

Timo’s health issues began in late June when a painless lump appeared on his neck. By the end of August, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, specifically a mature B-cell type that is known for its rapid progression. Given the severity of his condition, Timo was admitted to Vancouver’s Children’s Hospital, the only facility in British Columbia equipped to handle such cases.

His parents, Wendy Wolbert and Keith Hubbard, shared their hopes on a GoFundMe page, stating, “The doctors reassure us that Timo will be cured. But the treatment requires four to five months of intense chemotherapy, and Timo must stay in the hospital full-time to receive medications and close monitoring.” After treatment, Timo will face several years of follow-up visits to ensure his recovery.

To remain close to Timo, his family has relocated to Vancouver. His brother, Louis, has started a new school for the fall semester but visits Timo daily. “When we hear them laughing together, everything feels okay,” his parents wrote on the fundraising page.

The oncology ward at B.C. Children’s Hospital is designed to keep young patients engaged and entertained. It offers a range of activities, including games, consoles, musical instruments, art supplies, pet visits, and even stationary bikes. There is also a sofa-bed in Timo’s room, allowing one of his parents to stay with him day and night.

The hospital is a challenging nine-hour drive away from Nelson, often traversing hazardous mountain passes. The family’s fundraising goal is set at $16,000, with $12,231 already raised. The funds will play a crucial role in covering travel and accommodation costs as Timo continues his treatment and monitoring in Vancouver.

As the family faces this difficult chapter, community support has proven invaluable. Timo’s journey, marked by resilience and hope, continues to inspire many as they rally around him during this critical time.
