The 2025 Windsor/Essex County Music Recognition Awards successfully returned this September, celebrating local musicians and community contributors while generating funds for Crime Stoppers Windsor & Essex County. Over the course of two evenings, held on September 14 and September 21 at the Windsor Moose Lodge, the event attracted enthusiastic crowds from across the region and beyond.

The first evening of awards honoured 12 recipients, including Matt Weingarden, editor of the Tilbury Times, recognized for his significant support of community initiatives through music and media. The second evening showcased an additional 21 honorees, all celebrated for their contributions to the vibrant musical landscape of Windsor and Essex County.

The awards originated from the vision of Ken Koekstat, a retired Windsor Police Officer and lifelong musician. With a commitment to uplifting the community through music, Koekstat has been involved with Crime Stoppers for 17 years and has participated in charity events since 1965. In 2009, he initiated a committee to honour individuals who leverage their musical talents for community benefit. From 2009 to 2019, the awards recognised 114 individuals, raising over $20,000 for Crime Stoppers and various local causes.

After a hiatus due to the pandemic, Koekstat and a dedicated team, including Dianne Bussey-Bako, Robert Demarais, Steve Laforet, and Karen Tinsley, revived the awards in 2025. “It’s not a Hall of Fame,” Koekstat stated, “but a heartfelt thank you to those who’ve used their gifts to support their communities.”

The event not only recognised musical talent but also supported Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit program that enables citizens to report crimes anonymously. Tips provided through the program can lead to cash rewards of up to $2,000. The Windsor-Essex office of Crime Stoppers is currently located at LaSalle Police Headquarters.

The success of the first event on September 14 set a positive tone for the second evening, which nearly sold out. With strong community backing and renewed enthusiasm, the Music Recognition Awards reaffirmed the powerful impact of combining music with a purpose. As Koekstat aptly noted, “Making our community a safer place starts with recognizing those who give back—and music is one of the most beautiful ways to do that.”

The revival of this cherished event highlights the enduring spirit of community and the role of music in fostering connections and positive change.
