On September 25, 2023, Camosun College opened the doors to its research centre, Camosun Innovates, located within the Interurban Campus in Saanich, British Columbia. This facility stands as one of only three applied research centres in the province, dedicated to fostering innovation and creativity for various sectors.

According to Richard Gale, director of Camosun Innovates, the centre offers vital research services to companies, non-profit organizations, and government entities. “We provide companies, not-for-profit organizations and governments with research services for things that they want to create and put into the manufacturing pipeline, but don’t have the resources or facilities to do so,” he explained. The centre has the capability to support up to 150 clients annually, enabling them to utilize technologies that might otherwise be out of reach.

Innovative Solutions Across Sectors

Camosun Innovates has tackled a diverse array of projects over the years, ranging from the creation of specialized clamps for motorcycle seats to advanced 3D scanning and printing techniques for building a replica Bowhead whale skeleton. The centre’s interdisciplinary team prides itself on its flexible approach to problem-solving.

One notable collaboration occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic when the BC Centre for Disease Control approached the team for assistance with the Pfizer vaccines, which required storage at -30°C. Gale recounted, “We created a system by which they could move those Pfizer vaccines efficiently.” This project underscored the centre’s capacity to respond swiftly to urgent public health needs.

Another significant initiative involved renowned Indigenous artist Carey Newman, who sought help in developing a carving system for totems made from second-growth timber. Jesse Dardengo, an applied research technologist at the centre, explained, “We designed a large rotisserie system that allows him to lay out carving lines and work on multiple pieces ergonomically.” This innovative method enhances traditional carving techniques, demonstrating the centre’s commitment to supporting local artists.

Community Engagement and Future Potential

For the past 15 years, Camosun Innovates has served clients throughout British Columbia, with backing from both provincial and federal governments. The recent open house served not only as a showcase of their capabilities but also as an opportunity to engage with the broader community. Gale noted, “I still go to events here in town and when I talk about what we do, half the room doesn’t know who we are.”

He emphasized the centre’s potential impact, stating, “We have automation systems and robotics that could completely transform your production line. We have access to scanning technologies that will simplify your means of production.” This commitment to innovation positions Camosun Innovates as a key player in supporting local industries and enhancing productivity.
