Google and University of Waterloo Launch AI Education Initiative

A new partnership between Google and the University of Waterloo (UW) aims to investigate the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on education and career readiness. The collaboration will establish The Future of Work Institute at the university, focusing on how emerging technologies can enhance learning and prepare students for the evolving job market.

Edith Law, an associate professor of computer science at UW, emphasized the necessity of proactive engagement with these changes. “The workforce is really changing due to recent trends like climate change, migration, and now, the AI revolution,” she stated in an interview with CBC News. The initiative seeks to shape the future of work and education rather than simply responding to these transformations.

As part of the program, a new Future Lab will kick off with workshops on October 6, 2023. Students will collaborate in teams alongside faculty and Google mentors to explore the role of AI tools in education and society. This immersive experience will allow students to experiment and gain insights into human-computer interactions.

A significant component of this partnership involves the development of an AI literacy program. Law expressed her enthusiasm for this initiative, stating that it aims to support small business owners, entrepreneurs, and students from elementary to high school, along with their teachers. “We want to create this program so that we can make sure everyone is comfortable with AI technology,” she remarked.

In terms of financial commitment, Google will invest $1 million over several years, while UW will contribute $450,000 to establish the new institute. This funding underscores the importance of equipping both educators and learners with the skills needed to navigate the changing landscape.

Mira Lane, vice president of technology and society at Google, highlighted the immense opportunities AI presents for learners and educators. A UW alumna, Lane remarked on the importance of understanding the impact of AI within educational contexts. “Something that I think is really important is really intentionally trying to shape the future of learning,” she stated. “If we’re not thoughtful and intentional about it, we know that this technology is disruptive in this domain.”
