Okanagan-Shuswap Initiatives Secure $3 Million for Employment Training

Two training initiatives in the Okanagan-Shuswap region have been awarded provincial funding as part of a broader effort to assist individuals facing barriers to employment. The provincial government, in collaboration with the federal government, is investing more than $3 million under the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement. This funding will support seven programs designed to prepare participants for in-demand jobs in various sectors.
These initiatives target groups including Indigenous people, those receiving income assistance, and individuals with complex needs. Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, emphasized the importance of providing essential support during challenging economic times. “We want people to have the support they need, especially in light of the increased cost of living and uncertainty from American tariffs,” she stated.
Training Programs in Okanagan-Shuswap
Among the seven funded programs is an education assistant training initiative operated by Okanagan College. This program, which has received over $483,000, aims to assist up to 25 Indigenous individuals and those with significant barriers to employment across Vernon, Penticton, and Kelowna. The training spans 27 weeks and includes occupational skills training, employment readiness, and practical experience to equip participants for roles as education assistants. Training commenced on September 8, 2023.
Additionally, Okanagan College has secured more than $592,000 for its hospital and culinary essentials program, which will also operate in Kelowna, Penticton, and the North Okanagan-Shuswap region. This program focuses on preparing individuals receiving income assistance for careers in hospitality and culinary arts. Three intakes are planned, each supporting between eight and 15 participants. Each 21-week intake comprises 13 weeks of skills training, five weeks of workplace experience, and two weeks dedicated to job search and follow-up support. Participants will receive essential tools, including knife sets, uniforms, and shoes.
Broader Impact of Funding Initiatives
The funding also extends to several other programs across British Columbia, including an agricultural training initiative in the Cowichan region, a community support worker certificate training program in Prince George, Langley, and Kamloops, a building-service worker training program in Vancouver, and a heavy-equipment operator training program in Coal Harbour.
These labour-market training projects, financed through the Community and Employer Partnerships program, aim to deliver employment and skills training while actively involving local communities, employers, and industry representatives. Through these initiatives, the government seeks to create pathways to sustainable careers for individuals facing barriers, ultimately contributing to the economic vitality of local communities.
For further information on these programs, individuals can visit the relevant educational institution websites or contact local employment agencies.
