Teacher Transforms Burnout into Art Therapy in P.E.I.

Stacey MacKinnon found a new purpose in an art class designed for burned-out educators in Montague, Prince Edward Island. This evening session at Creative Rebel Studio allows participants to explore their creativity while addressing the challenges of burnout. As a professor at the University of Prince Edward Island, MacKinnon recognizes the toll that teaching can take. “I found over the years… that I got lost in the shuffle,” she reflected, emphasizing the importance of balancing achievement with the joy of the artistic process.

The class, led by Patrick Guindon, is more than just a painting session; it’s a therapeutic experience. Guindon, a former elementary school teacher, understands the struggles of his students firsthand. After facing his own burnout, he established Creative Rebel Studio to create a supportive environment for those who, like him, have felt overwhelmed by their responsibilities.

From Burnout to Creativity

Guindon’s journey into art therapy began after a challenging career in education. He shared his experiences of pouring his creativity into teaching, organizing engaging lessons, and utilizing imaginative approaches to connect with students. However, the increasing pressures of standardized testing and rigid educational practices took a toll on his mental health. “I poured so much of myself into it,” Guindon recounted, reflecting on the stress that eventually led him to seek a different path.

After a particularly difficult meeting regarding a suspended student, Guindon experienced a panic attack that prompted him to re-evaluate his life and career. “I walked out of that meeting thinking, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’” he recalled. This moment marked the beginning of his transition from teacher to artist, as he sought therapy and was encouraged to return to painting.

Art became a form of therapy for Guindon. “When I paint, I get lost in a good way… It’s almost like going for a walk through a trail you’ve never been on before,” he described. This newfound creative outlet allowed him to process his emotions and regain a sense of clarity.

Building a New Life in Montague

In December 2020, Guindon and his family made the significant decision to relocate to Montague, a place they cherished from their honeymoon. They left behind their former lives to start anew during the pandemic, driven by a desire to create a positive impact in their community. Guindon embraced his identity as an artist, offering classes in the backyard shed before eventually opening Creative Rebel Studio on Main Street.

The studio represents a shift in Guindon’s approach to creativity, emphasizing the importance of process over product. “We want to facilitate a space where everybody — kids and adults — can rebel a little bit against the step-by-step stuff,” he explained, inviting participants to find their own voice through art.

As Creative Rebel Studio celebrates its second anniversary, it has become a hub for various artistic programs, including those specifically aimed at combating burnout. Guindon’s classes have drawn interest from the community, and he has witnessed firsthand the positive changes in his students.

Reflecting on his journey, Guindon stated, “This is an affirmation that everything that I believe in and have talked about for so long is true and real.” Through his art and teachings, he continues to support others navigating the challenges of burnout, fostering a community that values creativity and personal growth.
