Microsoft Ends Discounts on DLC for Xbox Game Pass Users

Microsoft has announced that it will no longer offer discounts on downloadable content (DLC) for its popular subscription service, Xbox Game Pass. This change comes on the heels of a significant price increase for the service, which rose by as much as $11 in the past week. The backlash from subscribers was notable, leading to an increase in searches for how to cancel the service and even causing issues on the cancellation page.
In a statement to gaming outlets such as IGN, Microsoft confirmed that the decision to eliminate the 10 percent discount on DLC was part of a broader shift in its rewards structure. Previously, users could enjoy discounts on various add-ons, including the recently released expansion for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and digital currency for Call of Duty. However, Microsoft clarified that this policy change applies “to all games and DLC purchases.”
Changes to Rewards Program
Going forward, members of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will earn 10 percent in Rewards points on purchases of select games and add-ons within the Game Pass library. Premium members will earn 5 percent on similar purchases. Despite the removal of the DLC discounts, the 20 percent discount on Game Pass title purchases remains intact for Ultimate members.
While Microsoft did mention adjustments to its Rewards points system last week, it did not explicitly communicate that the DLC discount would be discontinued in favor of the new rewards structure. This has left many fans feeling frustrated with what they perceive as a decline in value from the service, particularly in light of the recent price hike.
Community Reaction
The response from the gaming community has been overwhelmingly negative, with many expressing their disappointment on social media platforms. Fans have voiced concerns that the increasing costs associated with Xbox Game Pass are making the service less appealing. Quoting the iconic character Lando Calrissian, one user lamented, “This deal is getting worse all the time.”
The combination of the price increase and the removal of discounts has raised questions about Microsoft’s commitment to providing value to its subscribers. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, players are closely monitoring how changes like these will impact their overall experience and loyalty to gaming services.
With the gaming landscape becoming increasingly competitive, Microsoft faces the challenge of retaining its subscriber base while managing costs. The elimination of discounts on DLC may be seen as a step back for a service that has aimed to provide comprehensive gaming experiences at a competitive price.
