Mount Royal University Launches New Aviation Campus to Expand Training

Mount Royal University (MRU) has officially opened its new Springbank Aviation Campus, a significant development in its 55-year history of aviation training. The campus, located at Springbank Airport just west of Calgary, is set to double the university’s pilot training capacity, increasing annual student intake from 40 to 80. This expansion addresses pressing industry demands for skilled pilots, as stated in a press release from MRU.

The formal launch took place in October 2023, although students began their studies at the campus in late August. Ian Wallace, Interim Chief Flight Instructor for the Aviation Department at MRU, emphasized the enhanced experience that the new facility offers. “Before, it was a good facility, but there were limitations. Now we have the resources, tools, and space to innovate training and serve the aviation industry more effectively,” he noted.

State-of-the-Art Facilities Enhance Training

The new campus features an array of modern amenities, including a virtual reality flight simulator, a multi-screen general-purpose flight simulator, and multiple aircraft hangars. Students enrolled in programs such as the Bachelor of Aviation Management and the Aviation Diploma will benefit from these advanced tools while commuting between the new location and MRU’s main campus for additional classes.

The development of the Springbank Aviation Campus has received notable financial support, including contributions from the Government of Alberta totaling $7.1 million and $3 million from Prairies Economic Development Canada. The campus is also set to acquire two new aircraft, a Cessna 172 and a Piper Seneca, to further enhance the training experience.

Comprehensive Training Approach Ensures Readiness

Wallace explained the training structure, which balances ground instruction with practical flying experience. “Students engage in ground training before any flying begins, ensuring they hit milestones in tandem. This way, they are not overwhelmed with information all at once,” he clarified.

The program integrates classroom learning with hands-on experience, allowing students to alternate between theoretical lessons and practical flying or simulator sessions. This structured approach aims to prepare graduates to enter and lead in the aviation sector effectively.

As MRU marks this new chapter in its aviation training program, the Springbank Aviation Campus stands as a testament to the institution’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the aviation industry. With enhanced training facilities and increased student capacity, MRU aims to produce more career-ready graduates ready to soar in their aviation careers.
