Science Olympics Invites All to Engage in Learning at MHC

The 33rd annual Science Olympics will take place at Medicine Hat College on October 18, 2023, offering a unique platform for aspiring educators to showcase their skills. This event, a collaboration between Praxis Science Outreach and the college’s education students, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and welcomes science enthusiasts of all ages.
Participants can expect a diverse range of engaging lessons aligned with the Alberta curriculum. The event encourages interactive learning experiences that allow visitors to immerse themselves in science activities. According to Patty Rooks, a senior scientific consultant, the Science Olympics is an invaluable opportunity for students to present their lessons to a varied audience.
“It’s really a wonderful opportunity for the students, because it allows them to present to a variety of people from different backgrounds and age groups,” Rooks stated. “Doing this helps them hone their teaching skills in a constructive way.”
Families will have the chance to explore multiple interactive stations. Each completed activity at a station will grant participants entry into a draw for science-related prizes. Those who successfully complete eight out of ten stations can enter for a grand prize, which features a large basket of science goodies.
The event is free to attend, although organizers request that each visiting group includes at least one adult over the age of 18. Rooks emphasizes that the activities will cater to various knowledge levels and ages, ensuring an inclusive environment for all attendees.
In addition to providing a day of learning and entertainment, the Science Olympics allows education students to include their lesson plans in their portfolios, creating a mutually beneficial experience. “It’s exciting to celebrate our 33rd year,” Rooks mentioned. “We are fortunate to partner with the education students at the college, especially during times when many individuals face financial constraints. This event offers enjoyable learning opportunities at no cost.”
The Science Olympics not only fosters community engagement but also emphasizes the importance of accessible education. Through this initiative, attendees can enjoy a day filled with fun, science, and learning, while students gain practical experience in teaching and lesson delivery.
