Lethbridge Police Service Launches Workshop for First Responder Families

A workshop aimed at supporting the spouses and family members of first responders took place on March 15, 2024, in Lethbridge, Canada. Organized by the Lethbridge Police Service in collaboration with Diversified Rehabilitation Group, the “Getting Better Together” workshop brought together police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and their families to address the unique challenges these families face.

First responder families often endure significant stress as their loved ones deal with operational pressures, which can lead to anxiety and depression. The workshop focused on providing attendees with healthy coping strategies and encouraging open communication within their families.

“The statistics are concerning, with about 67 percent of first responder marriages ending in divorce,” said Derek Sienko, Chief Mental Health Officer at Diversified Rehabilitation Group. “Our mission today is to challenge that number and create a supportive environment where first responder couples can thrive together.”

The workshop also featured discussions on the importance of maintaining strong relationships at home. Shahin Mehdizadeh, Chief of the Lethbridge Police Service, emphasized that when families are united and strong, first responders are better equipped to serve their communities effectively. “If they’re whole at home, they can continue to serve the community and have a fulfilling life after their career,” he noted.

In addition to discussions, the workshop provided families with practical tools and resources to build resilience and promote mental wellness. Participants engaged in activities designed to enhance their understanding of mental health, enabling them to support one another in navigating the challenges of life as a first responder family.

The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health support for first responders and their families, aiming to foster well-being and resilience in this unique community. As similar workshops gain traction across Canada, the hope is to reduce the strain on first responder families and help them thrive together.
