Windsor Blood Donation Centre Set to Resume Whole Blood Collections

Canadian Blood Services will soon resume whole blood collections at the Roundhouse Centre in Windsor. Since its opening in January 2024, the facility has solely focused on collecting blood plasma. However, officials announced that the centre will expand its services this winter to include whole blood donations once again.

In its first year of operation, the Roundhouse Centre attracted approximately 2,200 plasma donors. Currently, about 150 individuals donate plasma weekly or bi-weekly, highlighting a strong community commitment to blood donation. Greg Friest, the business manager for the centre, noted that whole blood has been collected at specialty clinics throughout Windsor, with the final clinic scheduled for October 22, 2023.

While a specific date for the resumption of whole blood collections at the Roundhouse Centre has yet to be determined, Friest assured the public that donors will soon be able to book appointments through the blood app or via the website blood.ca. This development comes as part of an ongoing effort to ensure that the community has access to essential blood products.

The decision to expand services aligns with the increasing demand for blood in the region. Blood donation plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare services, and the return to whole blood collections is expected to enhance the overall capacity of Canadian Blood Services to meet this need.
