Winnipeg Rifles Aim for Playoff Berth Against Edmonton Huskies

The Winnipeg Rifles are on the brink of securing a playoff spot in the Prairie Conference as they prepare to face the Edmonton Huskies on September 24, 2023. With a current record of 3-4, a victory at Jasper Place Bowl would guarantee the Rifles their first playoff berth since 2022. Head coach Geordie Wilson has expressed unwavering confidence in his team’s ability to perform under pressure.
After a challenging mid-September, where the Rifles experienced a four-game losing streak, Wilson emphasized his belief that no team would want to face the Rifles in an elimination game. “I really believe this… the only team that will beat us is ourselves,” he stated, reflecting the renewed confidence among his players.
The team’s momentum has been bolstered by a timely bye week, allowing key players to recover from injuries. Linebacker Cohen McCluskey is making his return after a four-game absence, while running back Kaiden Banfield is set to play in his second game since overcoming a high-ankle sprain. The Rifles’ offense has averaged a respectable 27.71 points per game, and they are optimistic about elevating their performance with Banfield back in the lineup.
“I’m confident in our offense,” said Riley Element, the team’s quarterback, who leads the Prairie Conference with 2,247 passing yards. “This week has been great for us, and I have so much confidence in this offense.”
As the Rifles prepare for their matchup against the Huskies, they recognize the importance of starting strong and maintaining focus throughout the game. Wilson noted that the team has struggled in the third quarter this season, having been outscored 52-24 in that frame. “One of the things we’re going to do this week is to simulate pre-game warm-ups at halftime to keep our focus,” he said.
The Huskies, also standing at a 3-4 record, have had a tumultuous season marked by changes in their coaching staff. They have shown inconsistency on offense but are known for their creative play-calling, utilizing trick plays such as onside kicks and fake punts. Wilson highlighted the need to contain Huskies’ running back Chris Katula, who, despite limited carries, has averaged 5.5 yards per attempt and has made an impact on special teams.
“Our defense is feeling really good,” said linebacker Kyler Banfield, emphasizing the need for a strong four-quarter performance. “We know we have the capability of being the best in the Prairie Conference; we just have to execute every snap.”
With playoff implications at stake, the upcoming clash against the Huskies is crucial for the Rifles. A win not only solidifies their postseason aspirations but also reinforces the team’s belief in their potential to compete at a higher level.
As the Rifles aim for their playoff ticket, anticipation builds among players and fans alike for what promises to be an exciting showdown.
