South Glengarry Gala Celebrates Local Achievements and Community Spirit

The 2025 Business & Community Awards in South Glengarry took place during a gala event at the Char-Lan Sports Complex in Williamstown, honouring individuals and businesses that enhance the quality of life in the region. Local leaders and residents gathered to recognize these contributions, with notable attendees including Member of Parliament Eric Duncan and Member of Provincial Parliament Nolan Quinn. Their presence underscored the importance of community engagement and volunteerism in South Glengarry.
Duncan expressed gratitude to the award recipients and commended all those who work tirelessly to improve life in the region. He reiterated his pride in the community, stating, “Proud to be from SDG.” Quinn echoed this sentiment, highlighting that a community thrives on the efforts of its volunteers.
Celebrating Young Philanthropists and Business Leaders
The Youth Merit Award was awarded to siblings Emery and Sophia Lacelle, aged nine and seven, for their initiative “Cans for a Cause.” The duo has successfully raised $6,000 for the Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice by collecting cans and rallying support from family, friends, and local businesses. Their goal was inspired by the cost of renting the hospice facility, which is $3,000 for a weekend. Their efforts exemplify how young individuals can make a significant impact through community involvement.
The evening also celebrated local entrepreneurship, with the Entrepreneur of the Year award going to Patrick Binette, owner of Jackpine Equipment Ltd. This excavation company has become a reliable resource for local farms, homes, and businesses. Binette expressed his appreciation for the community’s support and anticipation for future growth, stating, “I look forward to being part of South Glengarry’s development and growth.”
Agricultural Excellence and Community Service Recognized
The Excellence in Agriculture award was presented to Ralph Humphries, who has dedicated his career to agriculture through various farming operations. His commitment to adapting and evolving in the industry has made a lasting impact on the local economy. Humphries acknowledged the importance of family support and expressed humility in receiving the award, emphasizing the need to keep pace with changes in agriculture.
The Business of the Year award celebrated the Sheep’s Head Bistro, which marked its tenth anniversary. Owner Rizwan Mustafa highlighted the Bistro’s role as a community gathering space, where families and friends create lasting memories. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the community, looking forward to the next decade of service.
The Community Service Award went to Jane Vandrish, recognized for her leadership in the Char-Lan Minor Hockey Association. Vandrish has fostered a vibrant minor hockey program through her organizational skills and dedication to players and families. She shared her honour in receiving the award but emphasized that it is a reflection of the teamwork that drives the program.
Lastly, the Citizen of the Year award was bestowed upon Katy O’Connor for her initiative “Fishing for Autism.” Inspired by her son’s love for fishing, O’Connor created an inclusive event for children on the autism spectrum. This year, her efforts raised $10,000, which contributed to the establishment of sensory rooms, benefiting children and families in the community. O’Connor’s inspiring message, “Be the reason people believe there are still good people in the world,” resonated with attendees, highlighting the spirit of giving in South Glengarry.
The gala was not only a celebration of individual achievements but also a testament to the collective effort of residents dedicated to enhancing their community. Such initiatives and recognitions play a crucial role in fostering a supportive and thriving environment for all in South Glengarry.
