British Columbia Launches Flu and COVID-19 Vaccine Campaign

As the respiratory illness season approaches, British Columbia is set to launch its annual vaccination campaign for both COVID-19 and influenza. Notifications for vaccine appointments began being sent to residents on October 7, 2023, and will continue to roll out through November.

Appointments for vaccinations are scheduled to commence on October 14, prioritizing those at highest risk of severe illness. The vaccines will be available at no cost to individuals aged six months and older. This year, British Columbia will offer the updated LP.8.1 Moderna (Spikevax) and Pfizer (Comirnaty) vaccines for COVID-19.

Vaccine Scheduling and Accessibility

Residents can choose to receive their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations separately or opt for both at the same time. The health authorities emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against illnesses such as influenza and COVID-19. Staying up to date with vaccinations not only shields individuals but also extends immunity against emerging variants.

Those particularly encouraged to get vaccinated include seniors, individuals who are immunocompromised, residents of long-term care facilities, pregnant people, Indigenous populations, and those with chronic illnesses or underlying health conditions. For influenza, children under five years old are also regarded as being at high risk.

“Vaccination not only helps protect individuals, but also their families, neighbours, and co-workers,” stated the health ministry in a communication to CTV News.

British Columbians can schedule their vaccination appointments using a link provided in their email if they are registered in the Get Vaccinated system. Alternatively, they can call the Get Vaccinated phone line at 1-833-838-2323 or inquire at a local pharmacy.

As British Columbia gears up for another respiratory illness season, health officials stress the importance of timely vaccinations to reduce the risk of severe illness and bolster community health.
