Toronto Advocate Walks 50KM on Thanksgiving to Support Autism

Toronto resident Qaiser Saghir Mayo is set to embark on a significant 50-kilometre walk from Toronto to Milton on Thanksgiving Day, October 14, 2024. This initiative aims to raise awareness and support for Autism Ontario. Mayo’s journey, fueled by a passion for change rather than personal glory, seeks to unite communities across Canada in the ongoing fight for autism awareness.
Mayo, who works for a security company and does not have any family members with autism, has dedicated himself to transforming his footsteps into a meaningful impact. His past walks—33 kilometres to Mississauga in 2023 and 45 kilometres to Brampton in 2024—have gained increasing support from the community. This year marks his most ambitious endeavor yet, as he plans to start the trek at 7:30 AM and aims to reach Milton by 5:30 PM.
Community Support and Awareness Efforts
Awaiting Mayo at the finish line will be Mayor Gordon Krantz and other local dignitaries, all ready to celebrate a community united by compassion. “This walk is my way of standing with families affected by autism,” Mayo explained. “I feel the pain of parents who struggle every day. I want them to know they’re not alone.”
The event is open to everyone, encouraging participation whether for five minutes or the entire 50 kilometres. Each participant’s presence sends a powerful message of solidarity. Donations to Autism Ontario are encouraged, and spreading awareness is equally crucial. Mayo’s motto, “Long walk, loud message,” encapsulates the spirit of the event as a call to action.
Each year, Mayo selects a new city to foster connections and build bridges across Canada. His goal is to create a national tradition that emphasizes awareness, unity, and support for autism. In the words of Anne Frank, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” This journey embodies a gift of time, energy, and empathy for those affected by autism.
Get Involved and Make a Difference
Those interested in participating or supporting the cause can visit the Facebook page “Walk for a Great Cause” or email [email protected] for registration and donation details. Donations can also be made directly through the Autism Ontario Donation Page.
Mayo’s walk represents more than just a physical challenge; it is a significant effort to raise awareness and foster understanding surrounding autism in communities across Canada. With each step, he invites others to join him in making a difference and standing in solidarity with families affected by autism.
