Idemia, a leader in identity management solutions, has officially launched its new Supervised Multi-Acquisition Remote Technology for Enrollment (SMART-E) kiosks alongside next-generation driver’s licenses and identification cards across several states in the United States. This rollout signifies a substantial advancement in Idemia’s mission to modernize identity proofing and credentialing processes nationwide.

The SMART-E kiosks are designed to streamline the enrollment process for civil applicants and enhance criminal background checks. These kiosks comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology 800-63A digital identity guidelines, allowing a remote agent to supervise multiple enrollments from a distance. This innovative setup minimizes the need for physical interaction, ensuring both compliance and accuracy.

Christian Henry, Senior Vice President for Client Success at Idemia Public Security, stated, “User experience is at the forefront. Our technology is an industry-first to facilitate in-person enrollment for state and local governments with a remote agent.” Henry expressed pride in the company’s commitment to delivering the latest innovations in secure technology.

As of now, the SMART-E kiosks have been deployed in Pennsylvania and Colorado, with plans to expand to five additional states by the end of 2025 and at least ten by 2026. The kiosks exhibit a fingerprint rejection rate of less than two percent, according to Idemia, affirming their reliability and efficiency in processing background checks.

Casey Mayfield, market leader for enrollment at Idemia, remarked, “I’m thrilled to see the success of our upgraded enrollment kiosk so far. Residents now have a fast, reliable way to complete their background checks.” He highlighted the growing demand for secure and easily deployable identity proofing solutions, especially in employment and licensing contexts.

Revamped Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards in California

In conjunction with the kiosk rollout, Idemia has commenced the issuance of redesigned driver’s licenses and identification cards in California. Developed in collaboration with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, these new cards incorporate advanced anti-tampering and anti-counterfeiting technologies, including digital signatures and security features that adhere to federal standards.

Rob Gardner, CEO of Idemia Civil Identity, stated, “Partnering with the State of California to deliver this new driver’s license design is a milestone we’re proud of. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about raising the bar on security and trust.” He emphasized that the solution meets the highest standards in identity protection and that Idemia is dedicated to providing the same level of innovation and reliability to all state partners.

The new California licenses are engineered for durability, meeting a ten-year lifespan standard, and are made from proprietary materials that visibly indicate any tampering attempts.

Idemia is also expanding its partnership with the Texas Department of Public Safety, announcing plans to issue new tamper-resistant driver’s licenses and identification cards in the state. These Texas credentials will be constructed from polycarbonate and will feature a distinct Texas-shaped window, a red and blue optical variable design, tactile surfaces for physical verification, and a laser-engraved star to ensure REAL ID compliance.

Gardner expressed pride in the ongoing partnership, stating, “We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Texas Department of Public Safety to ensure Texas residents can continue to trust their verified identity credential.” He noted that these new credentials mark a significant advancement in secure identification, integrating the latest technology to protect personal information and prevent counterfeiting.

Under the new agreement, Idemia will also supply Texas with employee ID cards, election ID certificates, private security licenses, and firearm licenses, further enhancing the state’s commitment to secure identification solutions.
