Brandon School Division’s Mathew Gustafson Plans Retirement in 2026

Superintendent of the Brandon School Division, Mathew Gustafson, has announced his intention to retire, marking the end of a significant chapter in his educational leadership. His retirement is set for August 7, 2026, a decision he conveyed during a recent board meeting, as shared by board chair Linda Ross.
In her remarks, Ross read from Gustafson’s resignation letter, revealing his deep commitment to the division. “It is with great difficulty that I give my notice to retire from my role as superintendent and CEO of the Brandon School Division,” he wrote, expressing honor in serving students, parents, and staff since 2002.
Reflecting on his two decades in education, Gustafson acknowledged the vital role of collaboration among his colleagues. He stated, “I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside such caring and committed staff.” His decision to retire, he noted, followed considerable reflection on his leadership journey.
“Even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over,” Gustafson explained. He emphasized that he aims to allow the board ample time to find a suitable successor, thereby ensuring a smooth transition.
Gustafson joined the Brandon School Division in 2002 and has held various senior administrative roles over the past eleven years, culminating in his appointment as superintendent in early 2021. He expressed hope that his leadership fostered positive experiences for both students and staff.
“I don’t think I necessarily need to be remembered personally,” he remarked. “What matters most is that students have good memories of their time in school and that I’ve played even a small role in helping make that possible.”
Post-retirement, Gustafson plans to remain engaged with the community. “I might be helping my brother-in-law run the combine in the fall,” he joked, indicating a desire to volunteer and perhaps continue his involvement in education.
During the board meeting, Ross commended Gustafson’s leadership and dedication. “I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent,” she said. “It has been a pleasure working with you.”
In a show of support, deputy chair Duncan Ross described Gustafson as a “steadfast rock of competency,” acknowledging his consistent reliability. Trustee Kim Fallis expressed gratitude for his professionalism, stating, “Your main goal has always been the success of parents and students in BSD, and that dedication has shown in everything you’ve done.”
As the Brandon School Division prepares for this transition, Gustafson’s contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the community he has served for many years.
