Temiskaming Shores Nears Record High in Waterline Breaks

Temiskaming Shores is on track to set a new record for waterline repairs, according to the city’s director of environmental services, Steve Burnett. During a committee-of-the-whole meeting on October 7, 2023, Burnett informed council members that a total of 109 water line repairs have been completed so far this year. The number indicates a significant increase in maintenance work, reflecting ongoing challenges with the city’s water infrastructure.
Burnett praised the efforts of the public works staff, noting their efficiency in addressing the repairs. “Staff is doing a great job in getting those repaired in a timely manner,” he said. His acknowledgment highlights the commitment of the staff in managing the city’s waterline issues despite facing a growing number of incidents.
A significant portion of the waterline breaks is occurring in the Dymond area, linked to infrastructure that was installed approximately 15 to 20 years ago. As these systems age, the likelihood of breaks tends to increase, leading to a greater workload for the city’s maintenance teams.
The city council’s discussions around this pressing issue underscore the importance of timely repairs to prevent further complications in the water supply. With the number of breaks already reaching 109, the city may soon surpass its previous record, emphasizing the need for ongoing attention to water infrastructure.
As Temiskaming Shores navigates these challenges, the public works department remains focused on maintaining service quality and minimizing disruptions for residents. The timely repairs not only restore water service but also help safeguard the integrity of the city’s water distribution network.
Continuous improvements in infrastructure management will be crucial as the city seeks to address both current issues and future challenges in maintaining reliable water service for its community.
