Interfor Boosts Lumber Production Cuts Amid Weak Market Conditions

Interfor Corp. has announced a significant increase in its planned production cuts for the fourth quarter of 2025 across its operations in Canada and the United States. Citing ongoing economic uncertainty and persistently weak market conditions, the company now expects to curtail lumber production by approximately 250 million board feet, which represents a 26 percent reduction compared to its more typical operating levels observed in the second quarter of this year.

The revised cuts reflect a marked increase from the company’s earlier announcement, which included a plan to decrease production by about 145 million board feet from September to December, equating to around 12 percent of normal production levels. This adjustment highlights the challenges facing the lumber industry as demand remains subdued.

Split Between Operations

Interfor’s production reductions will be distributed roughly evenly between its Canadian and U.S. operations. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Ian Fillinger, noted that lumber prices across North America have continued to decline from what he described as unsustainably low levels. This downward trend in pricing has further prompted the need for strategic cutbacks in production.

In the second quarter of 2025, Interfor reported production of 936 million board feet of lumber, which decreased slightly to about 910 million board feet in the third quarter. The adjustments in output reflect the ongoing volatility in the lumber market and the company’s efforts to align production with current market realities.

The latest information was initially published by The Canadian Press on October 17, 2025. As the company navigates these challenging conditions, its financial performance and operational decisions will be closely monitored by stakeholders in the lumber and construction sectors.
