Chance Toder to Inspire at Resilience Rewired Conference Oct. 24

On October 24, 2023, the Resilience Rewired conference will take place at the Keystone Centre in Manitoba, featuring speakers who will focus on psychology, technology, and the human spirit. Among the presenters is Chance Toder, a resident of Westman, who is set to share his remarkable story of resilience after facing significant health challenges in his childhood.
At just 10 months old, Toder underwent open heart surgery, and by the age of 11, he faced a second operation that resulted in a stroke and a lengthy coma. His mother, Jolene Toder, recalls the harrowing time when doctors warned the family to prepare for the worst. “When Chance went into a coma, he remained there for a very, very long time. And when he came out, he couldn’t walk or talk or even hold his head up,” she said, expressing her disbelief at his recovery and growth into a motivational speaker.
From Adversity to Empowerment
Chance Toder’s journey is one of overcoming obstacles, and he aims to inspire others by showing that disabilities can drive individuals to reach new heights. “I just want to show that having a disability doesn’t push you down; it drives you up,” Toder stated in a recent interview. He emphasizes that a fulfilling life is attainable, even if it looks different from the norm.
Encouraged by online safety expert and family friend Val Caldwell, Toder has embraced motivational speaking as his dream job. Caldwell, who will also present at the conference, brings a focus on mental health issues related to technology use among children. “I’m a big fan of Chance’s. He has such a wonderful message of hope and resilience,” she commented.
Caldwell’s presentation will address the mental health impacts of technology on youth, advising parents on how to create a healthier balance. “Don’t allow kids to take devices to private spaces, including their bedrooms. Have rules in place,” she advised, noting that adults also need to set a good example.
The Role of Connection in Mental Health
The keynote speaker for the conference is Dr. Jody Carrington, a clinical psychologist who will discuss the disconnect experienced in the age of technology. “For the first time in history, we’re dying faster from emotional illness than we are from physical illness,” she stated, highlighting the adverse effects of constant digital engagement on personal relationships and mental health.
Dr. Carrington stressed the importance of acknowledging these challenges to foster genuine connections. “We can’t address what we don’t acknowledge,” she explained, calling for a collective effort to reduce screen time and promote face-to-face interactions. She noted that the influence of large tech companies often perpetuates disconnection, emphasizing the need for individuals to take proactive steps to engage with one another.
The Resilience Rewired conference is scheduled to run from 09:00 to 15:00, with tickets priced at $80 plus fees. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with several speakers and learn practical strategies for enhancing resilience in both personal and professional contexts. For more information, interested attendees can contact the Keystone Centre box office at 204-726-3500.
As the conference approaches, Chance Toder’s inspiring story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of community support in overcoming life’s challenges.
