The Latin American community in Manitoba marked a significant milestone on October 1, 2023, with the inaugural Latin American festival held at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain in Saint Boniface. The event brought together community members to celebrate their rich cultural heritage through music, dance, food, and various activities designed to foster a sense of unity and pride.

Alberto Velasco Acosta, a key organizer of the festival, explained that the momentum for this event aligns with October’s designation as Latin American Heritage Month. “Here in Manitoba, we didn’t want to just let that pass. We wanted to commemorate Canada’s recognition of the importance of Latin American heritage in building this great country,” he stated. The festival aimed to showcase the vibrant culture that connects members of the Latin American community while inviting the broader Manitoba populace to partake in the festivities.

Attendees enjoyed an array of traditional foods, including tacos and empanadas, alongside music genres such as salsa, reggaeton, and mariachi. Velasco Acosta highlighted the familiarity many Manitobans have with Latin American culture, noting that it is often present in the music and cuisine enjoyed by the wider community. “It brings in the cultural context of the things that many Manitobans are already enjoying,” he emphasized.

The festival also served as a platform to reflect on the growth of the Latin American community in Manitoba. Velasco Acosta expressed enthusiasm about the increasing presence of Latin American immigrants in the region. “We’re seeing more people coming from our countries to Manitoba. You might be hearing more Spanish when you go to the supermarket, on the street, or while walking downtown,” he remarked. This growth signifies not only the community’s expansion but also their integration and representation within the province.

The inaugural festival was a vibrant celebration of identity and culture, demonstrating the commitment of the Latin American community to share their heritage with others. As the festival concluded, it became clear that this event was just the beginning of a new chapter in celebrating Latin American culture in Manitoba. Through initiatives like this, the community hopes to foster greater understanding and appreciation of their diverse backgrounds, further enriching the cultural tapestry of Manitoba.
