Vancouver Island’s Camp Shawnigan to Close for Facility Upgrades

A beloved summer camp on Vancouver Island, known as Camp Shawnigan, will temporarily close to undergo significant upgrades. Established in 1979, this facility has been a welcoming space for individuals with disabilities, serving approximately 400 children and adults each year. The decision to suspend operations in 2026 was announced by Easter Seals BC/Yukon, the organization that operates the camp.
Tristan Klassen, acting CEO of Easter Seals BC/Yukon, stated, “It was a difficult, but necessary decision to temporarily suspend programming at Camp Shawnigan in 2026. Camp Shawnigan has served us well, but much of the camp infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life.” The organization emphasized the need for a modern facility designed to meet the evolving needs of the disability community.
Plans for a Modern Facility
The forthcoming upgrades will focus on creating the first year-round, purpose-built multifunctional space specifically for individuals with disabilities. This new facility will incorporate Universal Design principles, ensuring accessible recreation and educational programs year-round.
James Gagnon, vice-president of programs and services, highlighted the challenges of maintaining an aging campsite, noting that it has led to significant upkeep costs and safety concerns. “We are excited for the redesign and its ability to empower us to pursue excellence in the way we deliver programs and care at Camp Shawnigan,” he explained. Gagnon also acknowledged the hard work of the camp staff, stating that improved facilities would enhance the overall experience for campers.
As part of the redevelopment, the camp plans to replace existing dormitories with accessible cabins and create accessible pathways and parking areas. Additionally, upgrades will include an accessible dock, beach area, boat launch, and picnic space. The entire site will undergo leveling and grading, with programming expanded to operate year-round.
Completion Timeline and Community Support
The anticipated completion date for the renovations is set for the fall of 2027. During this transition, Easter Seals BC/Yukon is reaching out for support from donors to help finance the project, which is crucial for the future of Camp Shawnigan.
The camp’s website underscores its commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities. With the planned upgrades, Easter Seals BC/Yukon aims to enhance the quality of life for campers, ensuring that Camp Shawnigan continues to be a cherished destination for generations to come.
