Victoria Instructor Justina Bailey Transforms Fitness and Aging
A fitness instructor in Victoria, British Columbia, is reshaping the way people perceive fitness and aging. Justina Bailey, who has been teaching for over 35 years, aims to challenge misconceptions and instill a love of movement in her students through engaging group classes.
Bailey, 53, offers both in-person and online fitness sessions, creating an inclusive environment for all participants. Her students frequently commend her approach, noting how she not only teaches exercises but also provides personal attention and encouragement. “Every instructor teaches you how to do something, but not why,” said Peggy Howard, a participant in Bailey’s classes. Fellow student Libby Rush echoed this sentiment, stating, “She sees you, and she really sees you.”
Bailey’s journey into fitness began serendipitously when she was a teenager at the YMCA. A male instructor encouraged her to pursue fitness instruction, recognizing her enthusiasm. Since then, Bailey has trained extensively around the globe, learning from various experts in fields such as osteopathy and physiotherapy. “I’ll visit orthodontists, and osteopaths, and pelvic floor physios, and ask what’s working in their fields so that we can put it together, because this is an organism we’re talking about,” she explained.
Creating an Inclusive Fitness Culture
Students appreciate Bailey’s respectful consideration of their individual capabilities. “She’s so respectful of everyone’s limitations, and she takes the time to look at how you’re doing an exercise, correct you where necessary, and applaud you when you succeed,” Howard noted.
Bailey’s classes offer an escape for many, including those managing chronic health conditions. Rush shared her experience, stating, “I have a chronic disease, and when I come to Justina, I don’t have it. I’m transported.” This sentiment reflects Bailey’s ability to create a supportive atmosphere where participants feel empowered.
The instructor’s efforts have garnered recognition. Recently, she was named one of Canada’s top fitness instructors by Impact magazine. One of her classes in Oak Bay started with just six students but has since expanded to a fully booked group of 35, demonstrating the strong community she has built.
Inspiring a Love for Movement
Students describe Bailey as a source of inspiration and hope. Rush stated, “I think a lot of people have used the word inspiration, but I think the other word she gives me is just hope. She’s like the queen bee; people just want to be around her.”
Participants consistently praise Bailey’s qualities, emphasizing her patience, knowledge, and commitment to learning. Sheridan Cooper described her as “inspiring, understanding, patient, knowledgeable, and always learning.”
Bailey values the reciprocal support she receives from her students. “We’re a good team; I think I support them as much as they support me back,” she remarked. Her approach not only fosters physical fitness but also cultivates meaningful connections among class members.
As Bailey continues her mission to promote health and well-being, she remains dedicated to helping individuals embrace movement as a lifelong pursuit. Her classes serve as a testament to the positive impact of fitness in navigating the challenges of aging.
