Gatineau Transit Workers Prepare for Strike Action on October 20

Gatineau’s public transit service, known as the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO), is bracing for potential disruptions as some workers have announced plans to strike starting at 12:01 a.m. on October 20, 2025. The strike action, initiated by unionized supervisors, comes amid ongoing contract negotiations that have yet to yield a resolution.
Workers represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1557 have been without a contract since 2023. The union claims that despite negotiating in good faith over the past year, discussions have stalled. “The employer and the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) have continuously delayed negotiations,” the union stated in a press release.
The union’s frustration stems from the CIRB’s failure to respond within the required timeframe concerning strike or lockout regulations. The stipulated 82-day timeframe for the CIRB’s engagement ended on September 2, 2025, leaving workers uncertain about their rights and the terms of their employment.
The potential strike could significantly impact transit services in Gatineau, a city in the province of Quebec, as many residents rely on public transportation for their daily commutes. Union representatives stress that the strike is a last resort, emphasizing their commitment to securing fair working conditions for all members.
In response to the looming strike, the STO has stated it remains committed to reaching an agreement that meets the needs of both the workers and the organization. The situation highlights a broader trend of labor disputes across various sectors in Canada, where workers are increasingly advocating for better working conditions and fair compensation.
As the situation develops, both the union and the transit authority are expected to take measures to address the concerns raised by the workers. The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial in determining the future of public transit in Gatineau and the welfare of its employees.
