Regional District Adjusts Transfer Station Hours Due to Job Action
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has announced temporary changes to the operating hours of the Shelley and Cummings Road transfer stations. These adjustments are a direct response to job action taken by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1699, which represents workers in the region.
The modifications to the transfer station hours will take effect from September 1, 2023. According to the Regional District, the alterations aim to manage operations effectively while ensuring that community waste disposal services remain accessible. The revised schedule will allow the transfer stations to operate under reduced hours until the job action concludes.
Details of the New Operating Hours
Under the new schedule, the Shelley transfer station will be open to the public from 10:00 to 16:00 on weekdays, and 09:00 to 15:00 on weekends. The Cummings Road transfer station will follow a similar timetable, with public access limited to the same hours.
Residents are encouraged to plan their visits accordingly, as these changes may affect regular disposal practices. The district has emphasized that despite the job action, they are committed to maintaining essential services for the community.
Background on CUPE Local 1699 Job Action
CUPE Local 1699 represents workers in various sectors across the region, and their decision to initiate job action reflects ongoing negotiations regarding employment conditions and compensation. The union has expressed concerns about fair wages and adequate working conditions, leading to this response.
The Regional District has been in discussions with CUPE Local 1699 to address these concerns and aims to resolve the situation promptly. In the meantime, the altered hours for the transfer stations are expected to remain in place until an agreement is reached.
The community’s understanding and cooperation are vital as these changes unfold. The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George remains dedicated to keeping residents informed and up to date on the developments regarding this matter. Further announcements will be made as negotiations progress and operational adjustments are required.
